DC hotwire for Garmin GPS

A couple weeks ago I ordered the Touratech Hardwire cable kit for my Garmin Streetpilot 2610, I have a cigarette plug wired to my battery already but it is very unreliable, with plugs coming out of it while riding, loosing electrical contact inside, and corroding due to water getting inside.  After my trip last week, the new kit was really desirable.  I went out tonight and installed it.  I just fed the black line from the handlebars around the left side of the bike inside the frame and zip-tied it to other lines, to the back under the seat to the battery, attached all the lines as shown below and it works great, no more flickering at idle, or at slow speeds.  The screen was bright and solid, even when the starter was turning over.

The installation was easy, but i was a little disappointed in the cheapness of the red and black wires coming out of the Garmin cable.  When they’re inside a thick plastic cord, they’re fine, but they seem really fragile, and i didn’t have any electrical tape to wrap around them.  I tried to spread dielectric grease over exposed areas and the terminals on the battery.  Hopefully it will hold up.  If it doesn’t, i guess i’ll get another kit and really protect the wires on the second install!  Erik, you definitely need to get the kit!

07:17 a.m. -The hungry bear awakens from his winter slumber

Tired, after not much sleep last night, I’m Starting to get ready.  Basically everything is packed.  I just checked current temps outside and it’s around 45f.  Yikes, it’s going to be freezing!  I thought last night, as I lay in bed thinking, that maybe I should pack my warmer sleeping bag.  Anyway, I’m hopeful to be gone by 8:00 a.m. , so I’d better get going.  My brother is starting a 9-day partially off-road ride on Saturday morning that I had planned on doing with him, in Southern Utah and Northern AZ.  Good luck E!

Ok, it’s my second try!

Ok, So I’m headed off tomorrow, for my second try at the Missouri/Arkansas/Oklahoma/Kansas trip.  The last one didn’t turn out as planned (I know I haven’t, written up the post(s) for it yet), so I’m hoping that this one is a bit better!

Anyway, I’ll post some photos of the ride and write up some journals when i get back!

Well, that wasn’t that bad!

I worked for about an hour and the manual transfer went well.  Everything is basically done, though I did notice some editing errors that will have to be fixed, as well as some photo hosting problems due to transfer of photos.  Anyway, I should be able to fix those problems relatively easy.  Enjoy!  — Kerosene 1–

It might take a while…

I’m actually using this blog as a replacement for the blog I’ve been running at Askerosene.com, since I’ve been having problems with it.  I’m going to try and transfer all content over to this website, and hopefully have no problems.  Like that type of thing every happens.  Anyway, please bear with me during the transition process.
